TEN COOL THINGS TO DO AT THE DAYTONA 500
The Daytona 500 is the biggest, most prestigious - and richest - race of the NASCAR season. Billed as "the Great American Race," about 50,000 fans will descend on Daytona International Speedway, and thousands more will watch the gas-powered spectacle on TV.
The world's first motorsports stadium just got a $400 million dollar facelift, and offers plenty to see while you're there - besides the actual race. But as long as you're in the Daytona Beach area, there are some other other fun things to do, too.
1. "SPRINT FANZONE" AT THE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
It's a huge space within the Speedway complex that allows you to mingle with racing legends, current stars, other automotive fans and more. You'll get a look inside some of the garages, and never know who you'll see coming and going between the track. Keep your phone - and a sharpie for autographing stuff - handy!
2. TOUCH THE TRACK
It's a fan tradition, with thousands of racing enthusiasts invading the Speedway track before the race. It's one way to get a sense of the "banks" the cars must handle - and you can sign your name on the start/finish line.
3. DRIVE YOUR CAR ON DAYTONA BEACH!
It's among the world's most famous beaches, and in some sections, you're allowed to drive along the ocean on the hard packed sand. Perfect with the top down! Just don't mistake it for the Speedway.
4. TEST YOUR SKILLS AT SPEED PARK MOTORSPORTS
201 Fentress Blvd., Daytona Beach
If the "500" has inspired you, grab the family and head to this go-kart track! The complex offers three racetracks, over 100 karts (with some specially sized for kids) and "dragsters" that go from 0-75 before you can say, "Wait - not ready!"
5. CHECK IN AT THE LIVING LEGENDS OF AUTO RACING MUSEUM OF RACING HISTORY
Located within Sunshine Park Mall, 2400 S. Ridgewood Ave (US 1), South Daytona, FL
It was formed to honor pioneers of both beach racing and stock car racing. The museum is also affiliated with the Living Legends of Auto Racing Memorial Brick Walk of Fame, that features inscribed bricks from the world of racing. [Located along 3050 S. Atlantic Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores].
6. STEP BACK IN TIME AT THE HALIFAX HISTORICAL MUSEUM
252 South Beach Street, Daytona Beach
Besides showcasing the history of Daytona through tons of interesting displays, it's a fun stop for racing fans. Considering that Daytona is so intertwined with the sport, you can see a great collection of old photos, artifacts and antique cars.
7. CLIMB THE PONCE DE LEON INLET LIGHTHOUSE
4931 South Peninsula Drive, Daytona Beach
Get a bird's eye view of the area by climbing the 203 steps of this National Historic Landmark. It's the second tallest lighthouse in America, and the adjoining museum includes both exhibits on lighthouses -- and naturally, car racing!
8. HIT THE DAYTONA BEACH BOARDWALK
What would one of the best beaches in the world be without a classic boardwalk? This one doesn't disappoint, with plenty of rides (indoors and out), arcade games, a giant Ferris Wheel and all the "beach food" your little heart (and stomach) desires.
9. CHECK IN WITH NATURE AT TIGER BAY STATE FOREST
4316 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach
After all the noise and fumes associated with the racing, recharge your batteries (and eardrums). Hiking, biking and horseback riding are among the attractions, but folks can also fish on Indian Lake, or take time out for some nature photography.
10. VISIT "BIRTHPLACE OF SPEED" PARK
Atlantic Ave. and Granada Blvd. (SR 40), Ormond Beach
An oceanfront park marks the site of the first beach automobile race, held in 1903. It's a nice place for a picnic, plus offers some terrific opportunities for taking photos.
